Practice Percentages


Gary served as a North Carolina District Court Judge in Judicial District 28 in Asheville, N.C. for twenty-five years until his retirement on December 31, 2010. He was the District’s Chief Judge for the eight years before he stepped down from the bench. Since then, he has exclusively served as a mediator and/or arbitrator in a variety of matters including commercial/residential real estate and construction, condemnation, business, personal injury, and all areas of family law.

He attended Davidson College, during which time he was an International Rotary Scholar at the University of Muenster, West Germany. Following his graduation from Davidson in 1971, he was a Rockefeller Fellow at Yale University Divinity School before earning his J.D. degree from the UNC School of Law in 1976.

Memberships & Affiliations

Gary is a former Chair (2014-2016) and Member of the North Carolina Dispute Resolution Commission. He has been recognized with the 2009 N.C. Advocates for Justice (N.C. Academy of Trial Lawyers) Outstanding N.C. Trial Judge Award, the 2009 North Carolina Association for Marriage and Family Therapists Champion of the Family Award, the 2008-2009 28th Judicial District Bar Professionalism Award, and the 2011 Pisgah Legal Services Roy Davis Award.

Other past professional and community activities include, among others, his serving as Chair of the N.C. Custody Mediation Advisory Committee, as a member of the N.C. Domestic Violence Commission, on the N.C. Family Court Advisory Committee, on the Z. Smith Reynolds Foundation Advisory Panel, and as a founding member of the board of directors of the Child Abuse Center of Asheville.
