Biographical

Francis Carling was born and raised in New York City. Early in his career, he handled general commercial cases and eventually specialized in labor and employment litigation. In 1980 he was recruited by Winthrop, Stimson, Putnam & Roberts [now Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman] to head its labor and employment litigation group.

In 1997, he joined a labor and employment boutique firm which was renamed Collazo Carling & Mish. In 2007, he was named a New York SuperLawyer® in the field of labor and employment law. Carling has participated in bar association activities at the local, state and national levels, and has been active as a director of both business and non-profit corporations. He has served as a trustee of Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York City, Inc. since 1975, and is a former President of that agency. He is a member of the New York Academy of Sciences.

Carling has served as a mediator since 1992, as a labor arbitrator since 1998, as a securities arbitrator since 2002, and as a commercial arbitrator since 2005. He has been active as a mediator for over 15 years. He received his initial formal training in mediation in 1992, as part of the launch of a voluntary mediation program in the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York, in Manhattan. Since then he has served regularly as a mediator in that program, as well as a private mediator selected by the parties. In 1998, he was a mediation trainer for the U.S. Department of Justice. At the end of 2007 he retired from the practice of law, and now works full-time as a mediator and arbitrator.
