Began mediating in 1992. Appointed to the Federal Mediation Program for the Eastern District of Tennessee in 1994. Designated a Rule 31 mediator by the Tennessee Supreme Court in 1997. After sixteen years on the bench, mediation practice was resumed in 2014.

Undergraduate degree was obtained from East Tennessee State University (cum laude) and the Doctorate of Jurisprudence from the University of Tennessee College of Law (with honors). He completed the General Jurisdiction Section, National Judicial College, University of Nevada at Reno.

He is a member of the Knoxville Bar Association, where he served one term on the Board of Governors, and a member of the Tennessee Bar Association. He is a member of the Hamilton Burnette American Inn of Court. He is a Fellow in the Knoxville and Tennessee Bar Foundations.
