BIOGRAPHICAL:Mimi Methvin is a native of Alexandria, Louisiana. She graduated Phi Beta Kappa from Tulane University in 1974, and received her JD. Degree from Georgetown University Law Center in 1976. While attending law school, she worked full-time on Capitol Hill for U.S. Representative Gillis W. Long. Following law school, Mimi spent two years in private practice before joining the U. S. Attorney's Office in Shreveport where she defended medical malpractice cases and helped prosecute a complex white-collar criminal case. From 1981 to 1983, Mimi served as an environmental staff attorney for the U. S. Department of Interior. In 1983, Mimi was appointed U. S. Magistrate Judge for the Western District of Louisiana in Lafayette, where she served for 26 years (1983-2009). During her tenure, Mimi presided over jury and non-jury trials in a wide variety of cases, including a 13-day jury trial in a patent infringement suit, and a 10-day jury trial in a product liability suit. In addition, she successfully mediated over 1000 civil cases of all types, including a number of complex, multi-party cases.
In 1997, Mimi was appointed by the late Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist as one of three magistrate judges to serve on the national Judicial Conference Committee on the Administration of the Magistrate Judges System. She served on this national policy-making committee for six years.
Mimi is a frequent speaker on federal practice, alternative dispute resolution, and discovery. On January 31, 2012, she spoke at the Wage and Hour Litigation and Class Action Conference sponsored by the American Conference Institute (ACI) in Miami, and this summer she will speak at ACI's Aviation Litigation Conference in Boston. Since 1989, Mimi has been deeply involved with the American Inns of Court movement, serving as organizational chair of both Inns of Court in Lafayette, and as consultant to a third Inn in New Iberia. She has served as President and long-time executive board member of the American Inn of Court of Acadiana which won first and third prizes in the national programming competition in 2011 against 375 other Inns of Court, an unprecedented feat.
