AVAILABLE DATES NOTICE EMAIL - JUNE Edition
We will be sending the next calendar dates notice out to former clients on FRIDAY JUNE 1st, so please make sure to update your online calendar within the preceding 2 days to be sure that your latest schedule data is used in the email sent on the Friday. If the server detects a calendar is more than 3 days old, the notice emails for that member will not trigger.

DIRECT MAIL
Several more states are seeing literature packs (letter, with NADN Booklet and local Roster info) going out in the next month:
ALABAMA - Alabama Defense Lawyers Association, Roster Card insert in magazine to 1500 members.
NORTH CAROLINA - State Bar Journal, Roster Card insert into August edition.
TEXAS - Total of 9500 attorneys, mostly litigators, receiving lit packs mid-June.

LEXOLOGY NADN NEWS DIGEST
After some false-starts, the Arbitration News Digest email seems to be working; members who are recognized for their arbitration work will receive the weekly bulletin each Friday morning around 9am EST from this month onwards!

FURTHER SPONSORSHIPS
Following on from our sponsorship of our Georgia members' Blog/PodCast, we have also in the last month expanded our sponsorships to include The Doug Noll Radio Show (www.thedougnollshow.com). California Member Doug Noll has a (superb and informative) weekly interview show, covering all topics relating to confict resolution, broadcast by WSRadio (link).  With several thousand listeners each month (including a good number of ADR practitioners) this provides another means by which NADN can raise its profile within the ADR community, with the intention of attracting interest from top-tier neutrals from those states in which we're not yet firmly established.

Of course, most of the available budget goes on promoting NADN's roster to the consumers for our members' services, and to that end we have confirmed sponsorships/booths to exhibit at the following for this summer.

National Association of Legal Assistants (NALA) - Annual Conference, July 25-28 2012, Omaha NE
As a large percentage of mediation and arbitrations are ultimately scheduled by paralegals and legal assistants, we continue to promote the NADN to this demographic whenever possible, at the state chapter and national level. We'll have a prominent booth with Rose-Anne in attendance.

Defense Research Institute (DRI)  - Annual Conference, Oct 24-26 2012, New Orleans LA
The nation's largest association of defense attorneys, DRI's annual conference usually sees in excess of 1500 attendees, usually including the board/management of most state chapters from around the US. I'll be in attendance along with Rose-Anne and we're also sponsoring the Friday Lunch, which gives us an opportunity to sing about NADN directly to attendees.

Personal Note - my trip to England did not go to plan, with my team Manchester United throwing away an 8-pt lead and ending the season strangely devoid of any silverware. In the words of the ever-optimistic sports fan - "Next Year is Our Year!" Hope you're all having a good early summer!

Best Regards,

APRIL 2012

ABA TECH SHOW, Chicago Hilton - Mar 28-30
Sadly, the heatwave didn't last as long as I'd hoped (Chicago was as wet and windy as it is usually described!) but that didn't put a dampener on the ABA TechShow event. NADN had a jolly nice booth and across the 2 days, Rose-Anne and I met with attorneys, firm administrators and IT folks from well over 100 firms who stopped by for a demo and take-away literature, including our new 2012 booklets. Although there were well over 1200 attendees, a majority were not relevant (too many 20-something law students for my liking!) but I'm confident that this raised our profile both within the ABA community - the response was entirely positive from the dozens of firms that took time to see the website in action.

Some photos from the event...

The LCD screen in the back was used to
demo the website to visitors
A new promotional banner designed for the show (ink was still wet!)  Some British chap proselytizing at a passing litigator from Texas!

CHICAGO CHAPTER - COMMITTEE CONFIRMED
While in Chicago, I was delighted to meet our esteemed Illinois Exec. Committee members in person over dinner: Frosty Pipal, Bill Hartgering, Robert Berliner and Stanley Sklar. We are in the early planning stages but all going to schedule we'll have a final roster of nominees for our Illinois Chapter some time in the next 3 months.

LEXOLOGY.com/NADN Partnership - News Service for Arbitrator Members
Some time back, we had a series of phone calls with Lexology, a UK-based business/legal news 'aggregator' portal about somehow working together, and we've now worked out a deal that I hope those members involved in ARBITRATION will find useful. Starting May 2012, all our Academy members who are flagged as Arbitrators will receive a weekly 'News Stand' email, featuring ALL news stories and articles pertaining to the most recent Arbitration decisions and case law (both US and international). This service is of course free and yet another benefit of NADN membership! You'll have complete access to your Lexology account in order to add other topics to your list of preferred news notices (should you wish to expand beyond arbitration) or if you in fact prefer to opt-out of such weekly digests altogether.

As Lexology works closely with the Assoc. of Corporate Counsel in the USA, this news service also allows us to raise NADN's profile with corporate counsel, as we'll be listed as one of their 'NewsStand' partners. (Note to "Mediation-only" Members: There are relatively few legal news items of relevance pertaining to mediation in general from this source, so our mediators will not be opted-in.)

DIRECT MAIL WORK
A busy month for the postal service in West Palm Beach...

  • Members in Arizona, Alabama, Colorado and New York will shortly receive materials to distribute amongst local firms and clients, helping raise awareness of these most recently formed Chapters.
  • Over 1700 literature packs, including NADN booklet and local state roster cards, going out to all known members of the DRI in AZ, AL, CO and NY.
  • Over 600 booklets/rosters to all known corporate legal departments in New York (affiliated with the Assoc. of Corporate Counsel) promoting the NY Chapter in particular.
  • 460 info packs going out to all known ABOTA members in AL, AZ, CO and NY.
  • Finally, personal letters and literature going out to 530+  litigation firms who have utilized our server's calendar service within the last year, outside of the established state of FL, GA, NC, CAL etc.

Thanks to Rose-Anne for enduring numerous papercuts! For those interested, here's a COMPLETE list (PDF) of all the recipients for this month's mailout, which is in addition of course to all the press ads and newsletter/magazine insertion orders confirmed last month (see update below).

AVAILABLE DATES NOTICE EMAIL - MAY Edition
We will be sending the next calendar dates notice out to former clients on TUESDAY MAY 1st, so please make sure to update your online calendar over the weekend of the 28-29th or on Monday 30th of April to be sure that your latest schedule data is used in the email sent on the 1st of May. If the server detects a calendar is more than 3 days old, the notice emails for that member will not trigger.

PERSONAL VACATION!
I'm off on vacation to visit family in England (and hopefully watch my beloved Manchester United clinch their 20th title!) from April 19th through to end of the month, but Rose-Anne will be available for any pressing matters. Her direct number is at (813) 600-3678, though of course I'll still be checking email regularly!

MARCH 2012

UPDATED NADN BOOKLET
We've updated the NADN Booklet (View PDF) for 2012, to include new information about our latest formal state chapters in Alabama, Arizona, Colorado, New York etc. Around 8000 of these are now printed and we'll be distributing a few hundred of these at next week's ABA TechShow in Chicago (photos to come next month!)

DIRECT MAIL ACTIVITY FOR APRIL
To raise awareness of both our local chapter sites and NADN.org nationally, we are all set for direct mail activity in April across several new states.
Each firm will receive a personalized letter introducing NADN.org, and literature pertaining to the local chapter along with the 2012 edition of our NADN Booklet.

In addition to the above states, we have local Bar campaigns active for 2012 in Florida, California, the Carolinas, Georgia, Tennessee, Texas and now New York. We hope to expand more formal State Chapters this year to reach a 'critical mass' that will sustain the costs of similar local outreach efforts on behalf of  members. This number varies state-by-state, dependent on several factors including whether ADR is widely-enough embraced in a given state, the relative cost of local Bar advertising, etc. Interested members can contact me to discuss directly by email.

AVAILABLE DATES NOTICE EMAIL - April Edition

We will be sending next E-blast on MONDAY APR 2nd, so please make sure to update your calendar on Friday March 30th (or that weekend)
to be sure that your latest schedule data is used in the email sent on the Monday morning.

PODCAST SPONSORSHIP
The vast majority of available ad funds go to reaching out to litigators, counsel, adjusters, prospective clients etc, but we're also expanding awareness of NADN within the ADR legal community. Our LinkedIn ADR-targeted sponsored ads are generating around 40 applications to join NADN each and every month (the vast majority of whom are rubbish!) but around 20 new members have proven to be excellent and worthy additions to our group to date.

We've also become the sponsor of Georgia Academy member G. Michael Smith's new podcast, MediationMatters.blog.com, which features topics and discussions of interest geared to legal professionals and the public alike. We're looking into similar sponsorships in the coming weeks, though our focus remains on attracting litigators!

Finally, we're confirmed as a Sponsor of the Awards Dinner for the DRI (Defense Research Institute) later this year and we will be attending that Annual Meeting as a prominent exhibitor in October (around 1500 defense attorneys from around the US in attendance!)

FEBRUARY 2012

NADN TRAINING RETREAT - Switching to Bi-Annual
As per email blast sent out this week to all those members who expressed a wish to attend the 2012 event - I've decided in consultation with committee members to switch the Retreat to a bi-annual event. With members so "stretched" with attendance at other ADR/Bar events, and with most Bars requiring bi-annual CLE (and/or CME where mandated) accreditation, once every 2 years is a more workable schedule for most members to commit to attend. We will thus push forward the Sep 2012 dates to Aug/Sep 2013, and plan forward for that with a formal speaker line-up and brochure near the end of this year!

AVAILABLE DATE EMAIL NOTICES - A BIG SUCCESS!
We saw a considerable spike in website traffic (1500+ additional visitors to NADN.org over a 3 day period from the 1st to 3rd of January!) to the National Academy site, specifically firms clicking the link with the calendar notice emails to view individual members profile/calendar pages. A number of members also reported that they received phone calls / email enquiries from clients for whom they had previously worked, thankful for the 'heads up' nature of the email bulletin, and have had new cases scheduled as a direct result! We'll continue to put these notices out monthly, with members having an opt-out if they prefer.

The next Calendar Notice blast will be sent out nationally on Wednesday, Feb 28th - please ensure calendar is fully updated by close of business Monday, Feb 27 2012 to ensure latest calendar dates goes out the next morning.

NEW YORK CHAPTER - Live on March 1st
I'm delighted to confirm the formal launch of our NY Chapter at www.NYMediators.org. Frankly - I think we nailed it!
We have 57 of the 800+ NY  attorney mediators/arbitrators in the state recognized. My thanks to our NY Exec. Committee Members: Irene Warshauer, Simeon Baum, Peter Woodin and James Morris for their assistance and counsel.

UPCOMING SPONSORSHIPS/OUTREACH
Rose-Anne and I are both headed to the ABA Tech Show next month in Chicago where we have a booth to showcase the NADN.org database to tech-minded attorneys and firm administrators, over 1800 attendees expected. We've also a prominent ad in the event brochure (see PDF) designed to cajole folks over to our booth. As our website is light-years ahead  of any searchable neutrals roster, and FREE, we expect positive PR from this!

I'm also exploring further relevant association/event sponsorships at the national level, in addition to our local chapter efforts. Rose-Anne is confirmed for the NALA (Natl. Assoc of Legal Assistants) Conference again for July (see July 2011 update below) and I hope to soon either confirm the AAJ Convention (plaintiff attys) or exhibit at the DRI (Defense Research Institute) convention in October, with more than 1500 defense attorneys present. The cost for attendance at the Assoc. of Corporate Counsel annual conference is frankly ludicrous, so that's ruled out.

JANUARY 2012

AVAILABLE DATE EMAIL NOTICES - PLEASE UPDATE YOUR CALENDAR on MONDAY Jan 30th
As detailed previously (see NOV pdate below), at the end of each calendar month we'll be sending an "Available Dates Notice" email notice to all the clients that have previously scheduled online with you. This EXAMPLE show the format, showing your dates for February, March and April. There is a good chance that at least a few of the attorneys/paralegals you've worked with in the past will indeed have a case pending and thus promoting your available dates in this way will increase the likelihood of an online or phone enquiry! As reference below in more detail, here are a few key points:

1) If members would prefer that these emails are NOT sent to their clients, just drop myself or Rose-Anne an email and we'll opt you out.
2) Please update your schedule through to at least April as the next 3 months will be summarized in the notice.
3) The server will send these calendar notices out to clients on the last day of the month, Jan 31st from 9am-11am.
4) If your calendar is not up to date (ie, more than 3 days since last update) then the server will not send notices.

We'll see how this goes next week and we can tweak the process in time for February's calendar notice!

NEW LOCAL CHAPTER WEBSITES FOR AL, AZ, CO
As communicated by email to our Alabama, Arizona and Colorado charter members this month, we've boosted the online presence for these local groups. Based on a review of search engine traffic in recent months, we felt it necessary to increase the visibility of these chapters with new domain names: www.Alabama-Mediators.org, www.AZMediators.org and www.Colorado-Mediators.org respectively.

Just as our founding state chapters have distinct locally-branded websites (eg; www.FloridaMediators.org, www.TexasNeutrals.org etc), these new websites contain all the same profile/calendar functionality, but have the advantage of appearing as LOCAL STATE associations. This has 2 big advantages. Firstly, Google and search engines will pick them up as local attorney associations (rather than as subpages of NADN.org) and should float them nearer the top of local keyword searches in the coming months. Secondly, it would appear to overcome a psychological issue for litigation staff - it seems they feel more comfortable in submitting their calendar requests through a LOCAL site for their local mediators and arbitators!

Now that we've generated this new 'mirror' website programming, we can quickly produce  new state websites as new chapters come online.

NEW YORK CHAPTER IMMINENT...

As of Jan 26th, we're ALMOST there with the due diligence interviews, we plan to formally announce the NY Chapter of around 60 members by mid-Feb and we're putting the final touches to the roster at both www.nadn.org/newyork and the local website at www.NYMediators.org.

2012 ANNUAL MEMBERS RETREAT

With apologies for the delays - we're hammering out possible content, speakers, venues just now and we'll have a full agenda/brochure  for all members within the next 2 weeks. For now, those interested should please HOLD the dates of Sep 20-22 2012 - we'll be surveying members by email in early February to gauge possible participation levels.

DECEMBER 2011

NEW YORK, NEW YORK...

We're hopefully still on target to announce the NY Chapter in early February, with around 40 members now confirmed, final number will be nearer to 65 if all due diligence interviews go as expected.

We've also finished the beta-testing for the new Email Notice functions (see NOV below!) and those will be active from the end of January. We'll be preparing some new NADN materials over the 'quiet' Christmas period (updating the NADN Booklet to include latest fact and figures for 2011, getting some spring cleaning done on member profiles etc).

MEANTIME, from Rose-Anne, Jackie and myself, a verry Merry Christmas/Happy Hanukkah to all our members, we look forward to working with you in 2012 - CLICK HERE FOR OUR CARTOON CARD!

NOVEMBER 2011

ONLINE MARKETING - LINKEDIN and NEW EMAIL NOTICES

We've switched our online ad budget over the last few months from Google sponsored ads, to ads which are "ultra" targeted towards known attorneys and counsel via the Linked-In network. This has generated less volume (down from around a hundred clicks per day via GoogleAds to 20-30 this last month from LinkedIn.com for example) but the resulting traffic is much more relevant. As I've mentioned to members before, the vast majority of the generic keyword searches for "mediator in " are divorcees looking for a family practitioner. Don't get me wrong - we're happy to take that traffic anyway but it's a small percentage that then turn into 'good' leads for our members.

Following an analysis of what might be done to better reach out to schedulers/firms for 2012, we're concentrating our efforts on those thousands of firms that have ALREADY used the NADN or local chapter websites....

AVAILABILITY DATES - EMAIL NOTICES FOR 2012

Commencing Jan 2012, near the end of each month NADN will send an automated email out to ALL those law firm clients that have previously requested you for a mediation or arbitration appointment via the calendar system. Example Screen shot below, click for full size email:

A few points on how this benefits members (NB: those members with their calendars disabled are obviously not effected by this.)

i) The NADN branding will promote the fact that you have been recognized for excellence in the ADR field by the Academy.

ii) The clients that are MOST LIKELY to use you in the next few weeks are - those that you ALREADY have an existing relationship with. To this end, these emails will literally "put  your face back out there" to all those firms with whom you've already worked. These reminders simply list your confirmed available dates for the next 3 months and ask the client to keep you in mind should they have any upcoming requirements.

iii) This also provides an incentive for Academy Members to encourage  their clients to send Online Requests, rather than having them call all the time. As members throughout Florida, Georgia, Texas and the other established state chapters can attest, this saves both your office AND the parties' time. Now there is the added advantage of these regular Availability Date Notices being sent out on your behalf, to guarantee greater mindshare each month.

iv) In order for these emails to go out at the end of each month, certain criteria must be met.
a) The calendar must have been updated within the previous 48hrs, so that dates are accurate for clients. We will send an email notice to Academy members/staff to advise of this 'must update' period near the end of each month.
b) If a calendar shows too many available days OR is fully booked for the next 90 days, the Available Dates Notice will NOT be sent.
c) Finally, all NADN members do have the option of opting out of this Available Dates Notice service.

iv) Of course, we'll ensure that the emails are not in breach of federal SPAM act regulations - there is a clearly identifiable link to allow firms to unsubscribe from these informational emails, if they prefer. On unsubscription, that email is moved to a blacklist to ensure that they cannot be emailed notices in the future.

ASSOCIATION OF CORPORATE COUNSEL - MAILOUT

We have this month sent out around 2000 literature packs (including personalized letters and NADN booklets ) to those major corporations affiliated with the Assoc. of Corporate Counsel. We received an updated database last month for these in-house counsel, and decided to reach out to only those states where the Academy has official state chapters thus far, rather than a more expensive, less well targeted outreach to the 10,000+ contacts.

Summary of Corporate Counsel contacted, by State:
ALABAMA (46), ARKANSAS (40), ARIZONA (113), CALIFORNIA (1175), COLORADO (159), FLORIDA (231), GEORGIA (185), MISSISSIPPI (4), NORTH CAROLINA(153). TEXAS Database saw no changes, mailed in April.

A small proportion of cases come just now from corporate counsel as opposed to firms but we hope that by empowering these firms to reach out directly to Academy members we can see that percentage increase over time!

CPR INSTITUTE - SPONSORSHIP OF ANNUAL MEETING, Jan 2011, NYC

In related news to above, we have agreed to sponsor (not exhibit) at the CPR Institute's meeting in January. We will have NADN.org materials (View PostCard)  handed out in the tote bags given to the expected 200+ attendees, a majority of whom are senior counsel at Fortune 500 firms who are in charge of their firms' ADR programs. We will also be promoting the launch of our New York Chapter via these materials, which we hope to have finalized for February 2012.

OCTOBER 2011

WELCOME TO OUR NEW NADN SERVER!
We successfully transitioned to a new more powerful server without any significant downtime, over the weekends of Oct 1-2 and 8-9. We've tested quite extensively and (touch wood) can't seem to get the server to overload so we'll see how it goes in the coming months. As an aside, we've also BANNED all traffic from China from accessing the website, as we were seeing quite a lot of spambots coming from that part of the world (as most major sites do in fact!). If any of you do happen to have clients based in Beijing, please let me know as we can seek a few exceptions to the blanket ban if required!!

We are also making updates this month (almost completed) to the various State Chapter pages on the website, to better ensure they're picked up by Google and the major search engines. This includes pushing "CityName mediators" and "Cityname arbitrators" searches, rather than just "StateName mediators" etc. This should take effect from end of November onwards and give us a boost in localized searches.

STATE CHAPTER NEWS - COLORADO & MISSISSIPPI NOW LAUNCHED

Our Colorado Chapter (www.nadn.org/colorado) of 16 charter members was formally launched on Oct 11, with press releases and announcements in the local Bar publications. Thanks to our Colorado Committee Members for their advice and guidance: Joe Epstein (Greenwood Village),  Judge Bill Meyer (Denver) and Steve Meyrich (Boulder).

Our small but perfectly formed Mississippi Chapter (www.nadn.org/mississippi) of 7 charter members is also being announced via the local Bar press this month. Exec. Committee Members are Richard Bennett (Jackson), Larry Latham (Ridgeland) and Raymond Hunter (Gulfport).

We are also pleased to confirm our New York Executive Commitee, with whom we'll be working over the coming weeks to finalize the line-up for our New York State Chapter, likely to be finalized early 2012. My thanks to Irene Warshauer, Simeon Baum, James Morris and Peter Woodin.

ABA TECH SHOW, March 2012
Looking ahead to next year, we have  confirmed that (for the first time) we'll have a booth at the ABA Techshow in Chicago (link). This show is attended by 1800+ tech-minded attorneys and firm administrators and provides us with an excellent opportunity to showcase the time-saving functionality of the NADN database to attendees.

SEPTEMBER 2011

SAD NEWS FROM HAWAII
We were sad to hear of the very premature passing of Michael Nauyokas of Honolulu earlier this month. One of just 2 members recognized in 2010, Michael was just earlier this summerawarded the ACCTM's Distinguished Fellow status in recognition of his outstanding contributions to ADR in the labor field, and he received a lifetime achievement award in May from the Mediation Center of the Pacific,  in recognition of his ADR service to the community. We have sent the Academy's condolences to his colleagues and family.  - a very sad loss.

STATE CHAPTER NEWS - ARIZONA / COLORADO / MISSISSIPPI
Monday Sep 15 sees the formal launch of our Arizona Chapter! We're pleased to confirm 21 AZ Chapter Members, with most all the top tier neutrals in that state. The AZ Committee have given most generously of their time - thanks to Shawn Aiken (Phoenix), Amy Lieberman (Scottsdale) and Bruce Meyerson (Phoenix). As with our existing finalized state chapters, ads and announcements will be running in the local Bar publications in the coming weeks and months, ensuring awareness among the local litigators, corporate counsel and paralegals.!

The Colorado Chapter is coming together slowly but surely, with an expected 19-20 final members. We hope to formally launch that state association in early October along with the small but perfectly formed Mississippi Chapter of approximately half dozen members. We have also now confirmed our NY Chapter Exec. Committee and look forward to formalizing this important state roster over the next few months.

GOOD NEWS / BAD NEWS - Server Maintenance This Month
The GOOD news is that twice this month (Tues Sep 6 around 9.55am; Wed Sep 7 at 10.40am) we've seen a large volume of traffic attempting to interrogate our NADN database at one time. The bad news is that this causes the server to crash out with a 'Too Many Connections" report, taking everybody offline for up to 15-20 mins while we reset our  server. We thought that we'd be able to 'patch up' our current workhorse using a few tricks to get around such overloads, but it seems that our trusty old Linux/Apache server from 2005 is simply not going to be up to the job - with members now logging in from iPhones/Blackberries from 40 states, and 1000+ visitors searching & scheduling online each day, it's straining to keep up.

SO: We're upgrading to a new server with about 8x the processing power / bandwidth and improved firewall which will future-proof us for years to come. This does though mean a closure of the NADN/regional chapter websites for a few hours later this month, most likely Saturday Sep 24th, just as soon as we've upgraded all of our software to the very latest platform of Linux. As soon as we have confirmation of this server- switchover date, a warning email will go out to all members notifying of the maintenance date and time!

AUGUST 2011

ANNUAL ACADEMY MEMBERS RETREAT @ RITZ CARLTON, AMELIA ISLAND, FL - AUGUST 11-13

The 2011 Members Retreat was (I think it's safe to say!) a resounding success, with members attending from more states than ever before (Florida, California, Texas, North Carolina, Tennesseee, Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Illinois, New York) and a terrific line up of speakers with Lee Jay Berman (Cal), Doug Noll (Cal) and Don Philbin (TX). Just as importantly as the training, this was a unique opportunity for EXPERIENCED civil/commercial mediators (rather than hobbyists and family practitioners that haunt the usual Bar events) to meet in luxurious surroundings, share experiences and 'break bread' together!

The 2012 Retreat will be finalized early next year, though it will most likely be a little later in the year (perhaps late Sep / early Oct) and will almost certainly be in one of our other states, perhaps Texas, North Carolina or further north - I'm exhausted even thinking about that right now(!)

CHECK OUT THE PHOTOS AND TESTIMONIALS ONLINE  HERE!

JULY 2011

LIABILITY INSURANCE FOR NADN MEMBERS - NEW AGREEMENT WITH COMPLETE EQUITY MARKETS, INC.

As a new member benefit, we have partnered with Complete Equity Markets Inc. of Chicago,IL to offer our members reduced rate mediation/arbitration practice professional liability insurance. Although we do not require members to have insurance for their ADR practice, many full-time mediators in our founding Florida Chapter use CEM to insure them against claims and the company has an excellent reputation, working with around a dozen other regional ADR groups that we know of.

The insurance company website can be visited directly at www.cemins.com and any NADN members wishing to apply for coverage should please call Betsy Thomas directly at 1-800-323-6234, Ext.472. The CEM website will be updated in the next week or so to include NADN as one of it's "pre-approved" ADR organizations - meantime, official CEM press release viewable here!

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LEGAL ASSISTANTS - ANNUAL CONFERENCE - Dallas, JULY 28-30
One of the reasons for the late  update this month - I've been waiting on photos from Rose-Anne to post here! Here are a few fresh from the event...

Rose-Anne Raies setting up our exhibition table The website was shown off to all attendees!

More attendees dropping by for literature and a demo! Rose-Anne had 10 minutes to present the website to
all attendees (Grainy video still!)

The NALA Conference is attended by more than 400  senior paralegals from more than 30 state chapters of the association and we have a captive audience for a presentation to attendees at the top of the conference on Thursday July 28. Although not often the 'decision makers', paralegals are an important target group for us, as we've seen from our Florida and other longer-established chapters that these are the individuals who are often the gatekeepers as far as scheduling the various attending parties -  thus, they're the ones who tend to find the calendaring function most useful. If all goes to plan, all of these attendees will return to their firms around the US, armed with literature and a firm understanding of the calibre of our member database!

We will be preparing for our annual conference over the next week or two, so watch out for photos and media from that event next month!

JUNE 2011

NATIONAL PRESS COVERAGE - CORPORATE COUNSEL MAGAZINE/WEB
Our outreach to ACC members and in-house counsel the last few weeks' has caused quite the buzz, resulting in a call this month from the Senior Editor at Corporate Counsel magazine, published by ALM (who own the Law.com online portals). The profile on the Academy is entitled "Taking Sides: The National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals' New Approach to ADR", written by journalist Dan Kaplan. It does a TERRIFIC job of highlighting the calibre of our membership and gives the reader plenty of reasons to refer to our online roster to find a suitably qualified/experienced neutral. The article can be read online at http://www.law.com/jsp/cc/PubArticleCC.jsp?id=1202498204838

The same piece should be in print editions of the publication later in the summer and we are seeking to ensure that the regional ALM publications that we already work with (San Francisco Recorder; Georgia's Daily Report; The Texas Lawyer) also pick up this article for their local markets shortly.

STATE CHAPTERS IN PROGRESS
We are making inroads into finding suitably qualified/experienced neutrals in several new states:

ALASKA - We currently have no members. There appear to be just 3 "full time" neutrals in the entire state, so there will no formal Exec. Committee formed for this small state. We're hopeful that at least one of those will meet the formal requirements for NADN (likely for arbitration) and we thus hope to be able to turn this state to the light blue color on our Directory map page!

ARKANSAS - We are pleased to have 3 of the very best neutrals in the state already named as charter members. Our research in recent weeks has suggested 4 other attorneys/judges who would appear to comfortably meet the criteria, each of whom also has the required votes from existing members. Pending due diligence, we may then see a maximum total of 7 top-tier neutrals in this state.

ARIZONA - Research still pending, but we now have sifted through the list of over 300 'registered' ADR attorneys in the state and sought advice from the AZ Committee members: Amy Lieberman, Shawn Aiken and Bruce Meyerson. It is unlikely there are more than another dozen attorneys who will make the cut - we'll report back once investigations complete.

COLORADO - Again, research still underway -  we're optimistic though of seeing as many as 15 very qualified, full-time neutrals added to this state chapter in the coming weeks.

NEW YORK - Litigation atty. research has now been completed across more than 200 individual firms across NY - we have whittled the 500+ known ADR practitioners down to around 100 that were referenced at least twice by different firms. We will be finalizing our 4 Executive Committee members this month and will then move forward with the peer nomination procedure to vet the 100 'name checked' neutrals down to those known to the committee members and believed to be of sufficient reputation. Best guess just now would be perhaps no more than 50 neutrals making the cut for the formal NY Chapter.

MAY 2011

NATIONAL ASSOCIATION OF LEGAL ASSISTANTS - SPONSORSHIP
We are confirmed as the major sponsor for the 2011 Annual Conference of the National Assoc. of Legal Assistants (NALA), being held in Dallas, TX July 28-30.  This event is attended by more than 400  senior paralegals from more than 40 state chapters of the association and we have a captive audience for a presentation to attendees at the top of the conference. The brochure for this event has gone out this month by mail to over 18,000 members and features a newly designed ad promoting our NADN.org website on the inside cover (SEE PDF)

NEW YORK STATE CHAPTER
We are putting together an Executive Committee over the next month for a formal NY State Chapter. We've already compiled a list of all known civil mediators and arbitrators in that state (around 400 names) and we'll now be surveying leading trial attorneys over the next few weeks to generate a picture of who the most in-demand neutrals are - with the help and guidance of the committee, we'll narrow that list down to only those attorneys who prove to meet the Academy's criteria and hope to have the NY chapter launched officially by August.

We are also just now reaching out to some of the few 'ADR superstars' in Alaska, Arkansas and Colorado and hope to have a few more members inducted in those states within the next month.

ASSOC OF CORPORATE COUNSEL / Lexology News Service

Letters and NADN booklets have gone out to around 1400 known members of the ACC in Texas, Florida, Georgia and North Carolina. We've also had recent talks with the publishers of the Lexology email service, which is the industry's leading email news wire service for corporate counsel, based out of London. I will be meeting with the publisher in London (likely following our conference in August) to discuss the possibility of working together in some capacity.

APRIL 2011

ALABAMA CHAPTER LAUNCHES
We're pleased to announce the launch of our new Alabama Chapter, see PDF PRESS RELEASE. As one of the smaller states, there are just 20 attorneys and judges in Alabama who were found to meet the high standards for Academy membership, but it's a definite case of quality over quantity, with most all of that state's most trusted neutrals now on board, all publishing calendars for firms. The Alabama Chapter does not have it's own separate website (like FloridaMediators.org for example) but can be visited online directly at www.nadn.org/alabama
This state chapter format website works for all states now - over time, this will increase our online footprint with sites like Google.

ASSOC OF CORPORATE COUNSEL - MailOut
By the end of this month, we'll have sent out letters and NADN booklets to around 1400 known members of the ACC in Texas, Florida, Georgia and North Carolina. We will be recommending counsel to use the NADN website to search for a suitably qualified mediator or arbitrator, should they have pre-suit diputes. We're concentrating on just those states where we have an existing state chapter presence for now - we'll monitor the response (online and offline) to this outreach in May, and then likely plan to do a larger mailout to all 10,000+ ACC members later this year.

PERSONAL NOTE: I'm off on a "royal" trip back to England April 21st, back around May 4th! I'll be checking email at least daily but should you require an immediate response, please call Member Coordinator Rose-Anne Raies directly at (813) 600-3678.

NADN BOOKLET FOR MAIL CAMPAIGNS & EVENT SPONSORSHIPS
We now have over 10,000 copies printed of a small booklet introducing firms to the National Academy website! Rose-Anne will mail a personal copy of this out to you before the end of February.

As mentioned in December, we have purchased the member mailing list for the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA), a key target group of office managers and paralegals and will be bulk mailing 1500+ personalized letters and booklets out to these influential contacts in February. Similar mailouts will be scheduled for later this year to groups including corporate counsel, trial lawyer rosters and the National Assoc. of Legal Assistants.

CROSS-PROMOTION WITH ALL LOCAL CHAPTER ADS
In those states where we have separate state chapter associations  (Florida, California, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee and Texas to date) the members fund direct Bar advertising to promote themselves through local Bar publications, etc. All of these 2011 ad campaigns now include mention of the National Academy, encouraging firms to refer to the parent National roster should they require an excellent neutral from out of state. This should greatly raise awareness of the NADN amongst those firms that have already come to trust the calibre of the local rosters.

SEARCH ENGINE / KEYWORD IMPROVEMENTS
As I've mentioned before,  we'd rather see 100 relevant law firms visit the server in a day than 10,000 members of the public, thus being at #1 in Google is not our key concern. The VAST majority of people searching for local "mediators" or "arbitrators" online are looking for a help with a divorce or family case and there are plenty of websites (Mediate.com, Martindale Hubbell, Law.com etc) that can have that traffic - this just isn't our demographic. On the state chapter websites in Florida, Califoria etc, more than 80% of traffic comes from firms that previously bookmarked the site, and we aim to push NADN.org to the same level of usage nationally.

That said, we're working to make sure that NADN.org is easily found against the most relevant keywords, particularly those that specify that the user is searching for our particular civil/commercial neutrals...

1) We have loaded many of the site's pages with relevant keywords and content so that we should eventually float nearer the top of the ratings for the most valuable keyword searches, including searches for local state keywords (eg; "florida mediators", "texas arbitrators", etc). This takes time to achieve as Google is notoriously slow to recognize/reward newer websites.

2) One of the ways that Google ranks the importance of websites is how many 'backlinks' connect to them. For this reason, we have a very vanilla but useful roster page website, www.ADRConnect.com , which exists purely to boost link traffic to our main NADN.org site. This has already resulted in many members finding their names easily in Google searches with keywords such as "firstname lastname mediator" for example.

3) We have a pay-per-click GoogleAd campaign running in most states, which ensures a search for the most valuable keywords will pull NADN up as one of the top sponsored sites.

DECEMBER 2010

2011 NADN Conference - Details Coming Soon
We hope to have the location/venue and speaker details announced early in January for the NADN conference, talks already underway amongst committee members. Watch this space in January!

BREAKING NEWS - NADN THE MAJOR SPONSOR FOR NALA ANNUAL CONVENTION
We have just signed an agreement with the National Association of Legal Assistants (www.NALA.org) to be THE major sponsor for their national convention in Dallas, TX in July 2011. NALA is the largest association of paralegals in the nation, with more than 25,000 members, and we will be partnering with this association to disseminate materials to as many of these members as possible about our roster and this time-saving database in particular. More details to come early next year...

NEW NADN BOOKLET/ROSTER CARD MATERIALS
Following a successful response rate to a direct mail campaign to local trial lawyers for our Georgia Chapter, we are having new materials printed up that will be used in similar national campaigns next year, hopefully with groups such as the ACC (corporate counsel) and the AAJ (trial lawyers). We hope to have these designs viewable online next month and more details as to costs and budgets.

NOVEMBER 2010

Direct Marketing Databases
We have been reaching out to several groups with a view to doing some direct mail campaigns for early 2011. One of the most promising of these is the Association of Legal Administrators (ALA), which has around 10,000 members throughout the US. These members are typically in an 'office manager' position, working with both partners and paralegals and thus are perfectly positioned to help disseminate information about NADN to the relevant staff. We are purchasing their mailing list for a letter/info pack campaign to begin in mid-January, going out in the North-East

We also this month attained an excellent database of some 8000+ Trial Attorneys across all 50 states, which we'll be using to promote the NADN.org roster far and wide via email and fax in the run up to the holidays. This should certainly raise awareness in those states in which we don't have distinct state chapters just now, including the North-East, Mid-West etc.

Texas Chapter Website Launches at www.TexasNeutrals.org
Better late than never - the Texas Academy website is now live and being promoted throughout the region via the local committee members.

NADN LinkedIn Discussion Group
As per last month's update below, many members are now taking part in discussions at the NADN's LinkedIn group, so if you have not yet joined that please consider doing so, I will resend invitation emails in the first week of December. This also adds the Academy logo to your LinkedIn profile as well, which looks jolly nice and is good PR too!

OCTOBER 2010

Texas Chapter coming online in November...
We are pleased to announce the imminent launch of our new Texas Chapter, formed with the help of the founding committee of Will Pryor (Dallas), Gary McGowan (Houston), Don Philbin (San Antonio) and Karl Bayer (Austin). The charter list of around 50 attorneys and judges is a quite definitive who's who of that state's leading ADR practitioners and these Texas neutrals will be inducted into the NADN database in mid-November.
The new local website is still in beta-test for now but will come online at www.TexasNeutrals.org Nov 15th (we hope!)

Blackberry App - View/Edit your calendar on the road!
We have created a downloadable app for members who are addicted to Blackberry phones. Many members have already begun to use this in Florida and elsewhere (particularly those without a fulltime assistant back at the office), and so you're welcome to download and install this...

On your Blackberry's web browser visit   http://www.nadn.org/bb/nadncalendar.jad

Confirm that you wish to DOWNLOAD this new application

Once loaded, you will find the blue NADN CALENDAR icon in your Downloads folder

To log into your account, simple enter your usual email/password combo (select Remember)

Touchcsreen BB's allow you to touch the dates to select them, otherwise use cursor pad to navigate

Once date(s) selected, just change to your preferred new status using the 4 options at the bottom.

Members with iPhones/DROID/Palm Pre smartphones can already access their calendars via our MobileAdmin optimized web links - if you don't yet have your private URL for remote access via these phones, please email!

NADN LinkedIn Discussion Group
I emailed everyone an invitation earlier this month to join the National Academy of Distinguished Neutrals Group on LinkedIn. Obviously you have to have a LinkedIn profile to join (but if you're not already, you probably should be - it's really become the "FaceBook for Professionals" and over 75% of our members are on there!) The new members-only discussion group allows members from across the USA to share experiences, war stories and advice. Just visit THIS LINK to join the NADN Group and the ongoing discussion if you haven't already confirmed.

SEPTEMBER 2010

Press Release
Our press release (PDF) was circulated through BusinessWire on September 1st, and has already resulted in a number of mentions across legal publications: FL Bar News, NC Lawyers Weekly, Lexology E-Bulletin, with pieces pending in Georgia's Daily Report and the Daily Report. A number of ADR/Mediation blogs also picked up on it, though this really isn't useful for our purposes as we're keen to reach the potential clients, not those mediators and arbitrators that would feel slighted at not being invited to membership(!) We received interest from the editorial staff at LTN, a major Legal Technology blog/magazine, so we're hopeful that they might run a feature in the October edition. The press release also served to create many more 'backlinks' in the search engines to our website, which will nudge us upwards in the search rankings over the coming months.

Cross Promotion with our Local Chapters
Our local chapter websites (Florida, California, North Carolina, Georgia, Tennesse, Texas) have all now been updated to cross promote firms over to this National site, with prominent animated web banners on all content pages. In addition, we are about half way through contacting ALL known firm staff that have utilized the local chapter websites (about 14,000 individuals!) and we're inviting them to instead utilize the NADN website, particularly if they have the need for a neutral outside of their local area. This has already led to an excellent bump in traffic, from 60 daily sessions average in August up to 400+ individual visitors per day since the email blast to Florida area firms was sent on September 7th.

Finally, the local chapters all have member-funded ad campaigns running with local legal publications and all of these ads have now been edited to make mention of the NADN association and website, hopefully raising awareness of our National group and driving relevant attorney traffic our way.

WEBSITE UPDATE - PLEASE REVIEW!
Have you updated your EXPERIENCE form lately (see above button)?
At the start of September we added in more than a dozen NEW DISPUTE AREAS, which we would urge you to check off if you have settled such cases in the past. These include some head-slapping "How The Hell Did We Forget" areas such as "Professional Malpractice" and "Class Actions" as well as a few that are specific to certain industries (Software, Mining, etc.) PLEASE MAKE SURE TO DO A QUICK REVIEW OF THESE NEW DISPUTE FIELDS ASAP!

PLUS - Blackberry Users - Volunteers Needed!
Our software for the iPhone and Android phones seems to work just fine, with more than 80 members now able to log in to edit their calendar schedules from these smartphones. However, the Blackberry version still needs work - we should have a new version of a BlackBerry app working by October so if any members (with calendars active) want to volunteer to help beta-test, kindly drop me an email!

AUGUST 2010

NADN Annual Seminar, Aug 5-7 2010 - A Resounding Success!
It was a pleasure to finally meet many of the charter members from Florida, Georgia, California, North Carolina and Tennessee  in person down in Orlando earlier this month, along with a handful of new National Academy members. The event was well attended (particularly for these troubled economic times) and the feedback from attendees was extremely positive. My thanks to the invited trainers, particularly Lee Jay Berman, for putting on an exciting look at some of the latest techniques that members can apply to their own ADR practices!

Photos from the event can be seen online now at our Annual Seminar page - click here to visit! We'll likely shift the event next year to a different date and venue, yet to be decided - I do hope that we might meet in person then!

Charter Member Outreach Complete

We have called a halt to the fast-track outreach to already established ADR practitioners who are members of the IAM, ACCTM or College of Commercial Arbitrators, now that we have a handful of members on the ground in 36 of the 50 states. We inducted around 70 new members through this process, the vast majority of whom are fulltime practitioners who very comfortably exceed the NADN criteria. Future  members will have to submit to the longer form application, requiring them to provide the names of attorneys for whom they have mediated or arbitrated within the preceding 90 days, etc.

Texas Chapter - In Progress

During the August seminar, I had the pleasure of meeting with 2 of our 4 Texas Exec.Committee members, Gary McGowan (Houston) and Don Philbin (San Antonio) to discuss the new Texas Chapter. In conjunction with Karl Bayer (Austin) and Will Pryor (Dallas) we are close to completing the final nominees list and we hope to begin the outreach to these attorneys by early September.

Marketing & PR Update

  • We're just this week working on a 400-word press release to be sent out through the BusinessWire distribution network in the first week of September (bad time to do it in August!). This will submit news of the NADN.org site launch throughout North America, and we'll hopefully thus see some news coverage in legal publications and blogs. DRAFT RELEASE VIEWABLE HERE (PDF)

  • We have email blasts ready to go out to more than 20,000 contacts that have previously used our state association sites (FL, CA, NC, GA, TN). These personalized emails will inform these attorneys/paralegals/adjusters that they're better off using the NADN.org site for expediency from now on. The search tools on the NADN.org site are in fact quicker/better than the local ones, with the advantage of being able to search by date more efficiently than the old sites, so I'm hopeful we can get many firms to bookmark NADN instead.

  • The slow but sure work is continuing to drive search engine traffic to NADN.org site. As of Aug 11, Google has now picked up the homepage and a few content pages and a search for NADN finds us at #1, but it will be a few more weeks at least before ADR practice /member bio keywords result in significant traffic. We've just this month placed animated banners on ALL the local chapter websites, pointing to the NADN.org homepage - this will result in Google/Bing raising the 'Page Rank'  of NADN.org within another month or two.

JULY 2010

NADN.org GOES "LIVE" on July 19 2010
We have been pleased to welcome more than 60 new charter members from across the nation, all of whom are amongst the best established ADR practitioners in their states (welcome to the many members of the ACCTM, IAM and CCA groups).  Now that we have more than 500 attorneys named as charter members of the NADN, we will revert to our more formal voting/nomination vetting procedures, including attorney reference interviews, to induct any further neutrals. (Log out and see 'About' pages for formal requirements)

Now that our Directory map page has 40 of the 50 states in play, we've gone live and have submitted our "site map" to Google, Bing and the other major search engines. It will likely though be a period of at least 4-6 weeks before any significant traffic comes in from relevant keyword searches, which gives us time to tweak content and get all members set up with their log ins, calendar installations and firm website edits.

Reminder: If YOU would like to have your live calendar displayed over at your personal/firm website, please just call or email and we can help you make that edit; it's actually a very easy edit and your regular clients (and staff) will greatly benefit from the time savings involved in seeing dates online in this way.

Texas Chapter In Progress
As the state of Texas has  one of the largest ADR communities in the nation, we are working with a newly finalized steering committee to identify a list of the best established ADR attorneys for that state. We hope to have the 'Texas Academy of Distinguished Neutrals' chapter finalized and active before the end of 2010, with perhaps around 50 attorneys confirmed. (In many of the smaller states, the local market and our strict experience/practice requirements will generally not allow more than a handful of qualified neutrals to be invited to join.)

Press & Marketing
More to come on this in August, once we've had a chance to brain-storm with committee members at the conference. We do intend to hold off sending out press release through the wire agencies until September though; this gives Google and the engines time to pick up our site. The dog days of summer are not the best time to seek press, though rest assured, we'll be making plenty of noise online and to our already established press contacts.

Annual Adv. Training Retreat - Aug 5-7th, Orlando, FL

We have over 65 attendees confirmed for the inaugural Retreat event in Orlando, including a few of our very newest NADN members. I look forward to meeting many of you there in person in just 2 weeks time!

JUNE 2010
LAUNCH DATE SET FOR EARLY JULY 2010

Our NADN website is set to go live within the next month, after several weeks of successful beta testing! We will be tweaking content and keywords of the website after that, to ensure that the NADN site is widely linked to and it should quickly rise up through the Google ranking system to generate relevant keyword traffic. We're also working to identify the foremost practitioners on the ground in those states where we currently have no local members at all.
