BIOGRAPHICAL:Over 30 years experience as a civil trial lawyer, with the last 15 years concentrating in construction and commercial law. Approximately 65% of practice is in connection with construction law, serving as an arbitrator and mediator and on ADR panels of the American Arbitration Association and also representing lenders, owners, general contractors, architects and engineers and some subcontractors, suppliers and manufacturers involving public and private projects (commercial, institutional, industrial) ranging in value from $50,000 to $50,000,000. Handled disputes as arbitrator, mediator and attorney relating to change orders, delays, design defects, surety bond claims and mechanics' lien issues. Commercial law experience includes representing manufacturers, retailers and wholesalers relating to the sale of goods under the Uniform Commercial Code and termination of distributorships. Also represent Vendors and Users in connection with the procurement of computer hardware and software. Guest lecturer at N. C. State University and speaker on construction law topics at seminars sponsored by the North Carolina Bar Association and the Wake Forest Continuing Legal Education Programs.
Around a third of John's practice is now dedicated to mediation & arbitration. To date, John has mediated and arbitrated more than 500 cases. John has been on the AAA panel of arbitrators since 1988 and is certified as a "Master Arbitrator" by the American Arbitration Association. He is listed in The Best Lawyers of America for his work in construction law, and is also the Recipient of the Evelyn M. Coman Award for Distinguished Service in the Field of Construction Law from the North Carolina Bar Association.
