BIOGRAPHICAL:

Hon. Justice Jim Regnier, Montana Supreme Court, 1996-2004, earned his law degree from the University of Illinois College of Law. As a practicing attorney, Justice Regnier represented a wide variety of clients with a primary emphasis in civil litigation. In his later years of private practice and again after retiring from the Court, he shifted his energies to mediation. Justice Regnier is a charter member and past president of the Montana Chapter of the American Board of Trial Advocates and a former adjunct professor at the University of Montana School of Law where he taught Products Liability.

While on the bench he was responsible for designing and developing a continuing education program for the Montana Judiciary. For several years Justice Regnier participated with other state and federal judges in the Einstein Institute for Science, Health and the Courts, developing educational models for training trial judges on genetic and privacy issues. In 2002, Justice Regnier was elected by his judicial colleagues to serve as president of the Montana Judges Association. He earned the Montana Trial Lawyer Association Public Service Award in 2005.

Subsequent to his retirement from the Court Justice Regnier has mediated and arbitrated complex civil cases throughout Montana. In 2005 he was appointed by the U. S. Bankruptcy Court in Wilmington, Delaware to chair an arbitration panel involving a multimillion‚Äźdollar dispute between a major utility company and an insurer.

In 2009 Justice Regnier was an international election observer for the Presidential Election in El Salvador.

EDUCATION:

Justice Regnier is a graduate of Marquette University and received his law degree from the University of Illinois where he was recently recognized as a distinguished law graduate. In 2005 he received the public service award from the Montana Trial Lawyers Association. From 1966 to 1970 Justice Regnier served in the United States Navy as a commissioned officer, including Vietnam service.

Memberships & Affiliations

Justice Regnier is a past board member and board president of the Flathead Land Trust and formerly served on the board of the Montana Justice Foundation. In 2009, the Montana Supreme Court appointed Jim as Presiding Officer of the Montana Districting and Apportionment Commission.
