Mr. Howard is currently Of Counsel to the law firm of Lipson, Neilson, Cole, Seltzer & Garin, P.C., having joined the firm May 2, 2005, specializing in alternative dispute resolution services, litigation, administrative law, land use and government relations.  He retired as a judge from the Oakland County, Michigan, Circuit Court bench in April 2001 to return to private practice, and joined the law firm of Honigman Miller Schwartz and Cohn, LLP, as Of Counsel, where he specialized in the same areas.

During his tenure in private practice, he engaged in the general practice of law, with particular emphasis in labor and administrative law, and related litigation before various State and Federal administrative agencies and courts.  Mr. Howard also served as a Special Assistant Attorney General for State Attorney General Frank Kelley.

While a judge, Mr. Howard was a member of the Executive Board of the Michigan Judges Association, serving as its President in 2000, previously serving as its President-Elect, Vice-President, Secretary, Treasurer, and was Chairperson of its Legislative Committee.  He was also a member of the Academic Advisory Committee and the faculty of the Michigan Judicial Institute, which is the teaching arm of the Michigan Supreme Court.  In addition, Mr. Howard participated as a gubernatorial appointee for the Commission on the Courts in the 21st Century.

In December 1995, he was appointed Chief Judge Pro Tempore for the Oakland County Circuit Court.  He was selected as "one of the top five most respected judges" in the state by a WDIV-Channel 4 Lawyers' Survey conducted in 1995.  In 1996, Western Michigan University honored him by creating the Barry L. Howard Medallion Scholarship.  During that year, he also was the recipient of the first Distinguished Service Award presented by the Police Officers Association of Michigan, for his dedication and support to the law enforcement community.  Also in that year, he received the Eleanor Roosevelt Humanities Award.  In 2011, Mr. Howard was one of the recipients of the Champion of Justice Award by the State Bar of Michigan.
